Frequently Asked Questions

I want to buy a home. How much can I afford?

A great question! The ideal amount will allow you to make mortgage payments and still be able to pay for monthly fixed and variable monthly costs including utilities, transportation, groceries, home maintenance and repairs, clothing, entertainment and so on. Of course these costs vary greatly depending on your lifestyle and the size of your family. In addition, you should still have room for saving for retirement, vacation, education for your children, emergencies and more etc.

I just bought a home. What sorts of things do I need to consider from a financial planning perspective?

The costs associated with a home are often underestimated, especially with first time buyers. One should be prepared to cover minor and major repairs and maintenance costs by having an emergency fund set aside. Other costs include home insurance, property taxes, garden maintenance, utiliites (water, garbage collection), furniture, appliances and more.

We're planning to have children. How will this affect our financial plan?

Consider saving ahead of time if you plan to have children, especially if you plan to take parental leave, as it takes some of the financial burden of having less income and lets you focus on what’s important – your new baby!

I'm getting ready to retire and I'm not sure I have enough saved. Can you help?

This is a common question. Our approach is to help you figure out how much you need to live on and then looking at your assets to see what sort of income you can expect and how long it will last. Each situation is different and we have many financial products available to help find solutions.

How much money do I need to retire?

The most asked question and also the most difficult to answer! I can provide a quick retirement analysis that will help a person understand if they are on the right track. From there a more detailed retirement plan can be created to determine how much they might need, in order to do the things they want to do in retirement.

I don't have a lot of money. Do I really need a financial advisor?

It’s my job to make your money work hard for you. That includes helping you maximize tax breaks, plan for emergencies, help you save for retirement, navigate large financial decisions and everything in between. The more expertise you have in your corner, the better off you’ll be.

How much do I pay in fees?

My fee structure will be clearly outlined for you when we meet and I am happy to review it anytime. As well, all of your statements will show the fees incurred. I have nothing to hide and feel confident the fees I charge will be earned.

Can I get insurance and financial advice from one advisor?

Yes. I am licensed for both financial advice and insurance, which ultimately provides a better solution since I’ll have the whole picture and can recommend exactly the right products for you.

Do you provide group health benefits?

Yes, I can help employers set up both Group Health and Dental plans as well as Group RRSP and DPSP plans.
