It is a non refundable tax credit that provides a partial refund of taxes paid. The benefit can be transferred to a caregiver or guardian if certain conditions apply.

Pathways to help. The DTC = Tax relief

How?

  1. The tax benefit changes each year as inflation affects us. However in 2025 the benefit for those over 18 is $9,872

The pathways for the DTC depend largely on a number of factors”

  1. Your technology skills and those of your doctors will determine the pathway to a successful application
  2. The severity of the disability will eventually determine eligibility. There are challenges to be aware of

The challenges to overcome are listed here. This is in now way to deter someone from moving forward. There are teams out there that will help. Often at low, or NO cost

  • The person who may be eligible, knows nothing about the DTC.
  • They are aware but don’t know how to proceed (we do!)
  • They don’t know what the best method is to apply.
  • They have spoken to their doctor and he/she refuses to fill out the form
  • The fee to fill out the form is too high for the patient.
  • The form is filled incorrectly and subsequently denied
  • The application is delayed or denied altogether. Often, this results in the patient giving up. (We don’t give up!)
  • Past denials are not a determinant in re-applying. We often recommend to do so within a few months of a denial. In fact new legislation in 2022, make anyone with T1D eligible automatically, even if you thought you were ineligible.
  • You may not have a family doctor or specialist to sign and certify your condition. (We have partners who will help upon, verifying medical records.
